Take two slices of bread and spread peanut butter on them. Place half of a chocolate bar and a large marshmallow between the slices. Toast in a pie iron over a fire until the bread is golden. This makes a yummy dessert for chocolate, peanut butter, and marshmallow lovers.

    Camping - Pie Iron

Question: What the heck is a Pie Iron?

A Pie Iron is a mold of cast iron or aluminum, with handles. Each side also serves as a small skillet. Bread is placed in first and then the filling into the generous cooking cavity. The two sides close and are then placed over hot coals.

The solid cast iron design holds up to the rigors of the campfire best but must be watched closely to avoid burning. Pie Iron's are fun to use, and make terrific sandwiches and desserts. One word of caution- watch children closely because the fillings can get very hot!

A Jaffle Iron was originally a brand name. It was developed in Australia around the same time as the pie iron was developed in the U.S. It's now the common name used for hinged cavity cooking, not only in Australia but also South Africa and Indonesia.

So, if a camper wanders into your campsite and says, "Aw, I see you're having jaffles, mate." You know what he's talking about...your yummy pie iron treat!

Other terms for pie iron fare: Toasties, Mountain Pies, Hobo Pies, Pudgie Pies and Pie Shams.

    Cinnamon Balls

Spray your pie iron with non-stick cooking spray. Cut open your biscuits. Separate them and then make them into balls. Dip your biscuit balls in melted butter and then dump them into a bowl that has brown sugar and cinnamon in it. Use a spoon to roll the balls around in the cinnamon and sugar. Place them in your pie iron and cook until they’re golden brown.

    Camping Pizzas

Get out a loaf of bread and butter one side of each piece. Place one slice of bread into the pie iron with the butter side down. Spread pizza sauce over the bread, and add your favorite pizza toppings such as pepperoni, cheese, mushrooms, onions, and peppers. After all the toppings are on, place another slice of bread on top with the butter side up. Close your pie iron and place it over your campfire to cook for about 10 minutes. Be sure to flip your pie iron over halfway through cooking.

Take a spoonful of apple pie filling and spread it onto the puff pastry. Add raisins and sprinkle with cinnamon and brown sugar. Cover this with another puff pastry square. Close your pie iron, and cook over a fire until the pastry is nice and puffy.

    Sausage/Bacon Egg Muffins

Take a package of ready made muffins and cut them in half. Place half of the muffin into a pie iron that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Place pre-cooked sausage patties or bacon strips on top of the muffin. Pour a bit of scrambled egg on to the meat before placing the remaining muffin half on top. Close the pie iron and cook over the fire for about 5 minutes.

    Apple or Cherry Turnovers

    Bread
    Can of Favorite Pie Filling

    Directions:

Butter a slice of bread and lay it butter side down on the iron. Open the pie filling and spoon some on the bread (not so much that it squirts out though!) Place another slice of bread on top, butter side up and close the pie iron. Place in coals of fire for a few minutes on each side, checking to make sure it doesn't burn. Whalah! You have your hot fresh turnovers.

    Comments:

I have made these since I was a kid going camping with my family, now we take our kids camping and use the same pie irons we used 20 years ago!

Peanut Butter and Jelly can be substituted for the pie filling. The peanut butter and jelly was my brothers thing. He swears it's good, but I have never tried that one .... Have fun and enjoy!

    Elvis Sandwich

    2 Pieces of Bread
    1 Banana
    Peanut Butter
    Margarine or Butter
1 or 2 teaspoons Brown Sugar

    Directions:

Spread peanut butter to desired depth on bread. Slick bananas enough to cover peanut butter and then stick them in the peanut butter. Sprinkle bananas with brown sugar. Place together and butter outside of bread. Place in the pie iron and cook until golden brown, but not too long - the peanut butter will be runny.

    Comments:
All of my scouts thought I was crazy putting this together until they tried it. Poof! Gone in no time.
