im from the uk & not entirely sure what vegetable shortening is can you help ?

Vegetable shortening is a solidified veggie oil used in cooking. You can use it in cakes, cookies, brownies, pan greasing, you can melt it and use it for frying. There are way too many uses to list but you can do a web search and find out what all you can use it for.

Just think of it as lard, but made from vegetable oils, instead.
