I am having 20+ people for a dinner after my daughter's first communion and plan on serving pasta. Any idea how to prepare pasta in advance (say a day before) and re-heat the afternoon of?

Sadly, this is not a very good idea unless it is in a casserole. Pasta gets very starchy and clumps together when cold. Over-cooking just makes it gummy.
What you could try is cooking it when you get home, coat it with some olive oil and present it just at serving time. Put in a covered casserole and keep warm on a very low oven until you serve it.
Good Luck

make the sauce ahead and I agree with mrs s. you should make the pasta 30 min before serving time.

Have not been to this site for awhile -- computer crashed.
Here is my little secret for making pasta ahead -- works with any kind. It would not be feasible for 20 -- but, for 2-4 servings, works great.
Make it - adding olive oil to the boiling water. After draining, add some more olive oil to the pasta and store it in a zip lock bag.
When wanting to serve, put the pasta in a microwave bowl with water to cover the pasta. Heat thru - when water is pretty hot, it should be done. Drain and it's "like fresh".
