    Dry Frosting Mix

    Does anyone know where I can buy a dry frosting mix? I've got a neat recipe I'd like to try (from Cooks.com), but it calls for a coconut/pecan dry frosting mix in the recipe. I can't find them here. Or can someone tell me how I can substitute something for the dry frosting mix or make it from scratch? Thanks

    Dry Frosting Mix

    I suppose what you could try to do is make a frosting but don't add the liquid. Cut the butter and vanilla into the dry ingredients. This might be a good substitute that I would try.


    3 3/4 c. powdered sugar
    1/2 c. butter
    5 tbsp. skimmed dried milk
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    Water to make a stiff mix
    Combine all ingredients in large mixer bowl of electric beater. Blend well. Store in refrigerator. To use, remove and let stand at room temperature to soften. The flavor may be changed by adding lemon peel, pineapple marmalade, melted chocolate, or coconut, etc. Comes in handy for cakes and rolls.

    Dry Frosting Mix

    I'm thinking that purchased Coconut Pecan dry frosting mix, when done, would produce the kind of frosting/filling found on a German Chocolate cake. It isn't at all like any other frosting in that it is more coconut and pecans than anything else.

    Following is a recipe for the frosting made from scratch. I can not imagine how one would duplicate the dry mix since you would need ingredients that are not normally available to the general public.

    AND, I have no idea what the box instructions would have you add to the mix to make the frosting.

    Anyway, here is the recipe. I hope it helps:

    Coconut Pecan Filling and Frosting:

    3 egg yolks
    1 c. evaporated milk
    1 c. sugar
    1 tbsp. butter
    1 1/2 c. flaked coconut
    1 c. chopped pecans
    1 tsp. vanilla

    Beat eggs, milk, sugar, and butter. Cook over medium heat for about 12 minutes, stirring until mixture thickens. Remove from heat; add coconut, pecans, and vanilla. Beat until cool and of spreading consistency.
