    Any Suggestions?

Picked up another pork shoulder at the best price yet, but I'm tired of the usual seasonings I use--garlic, onion, oregano--and don't want BBQ. I was considering garlic, fresh ginger, and 5 spice this time around.

Anyone have some thoughts or suggestions?

My experience with 5-spice is that it tends to lean very much in the direction of BBQ- think Chinese BBQ spare ribs, for example. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but if you don't want BBQ it's something to consider.

You'll be roasting, yes? How about a rub with thyme, sage and kosher salt? You could do the West Indies thing where you stab the meat, then insert garlic cloves...

Never done it myself but have scoffed some magnificent pig roasted in a honey and marmalade glaze. Best by far was with Rose's lime.

Just had a thought. How about adding some latin spices and make like pulled pork tacos, tostedos or enchalada's. Not sure of my spellings, but I am sure you know what I mean. That would be a little different. I you added the spice to some of your pork you could freeze some of it and use it for a fast meal.

I ended up using my cheaters method--into the crockpot with some water and a packet of dried onion soup mix. Whoa, is it good! Too bad I didn't have cream of mushroom soup to add, also...might be cheating but it's lick the plate tasty!

No such thing as cheating. As long as you like the results.

Funny, I didn't remember that I was out of 5 spice until I read this post. Picked some up and already used it. I made pork tenderloin. With a Mango/Pineapple glaze.

I usually don't have cream of mushroom canned soup so I just make a bechamel and add sauted mushrooms.
