I usually compare recipes to see what the most common ingredients are, and take it from there. Try recipe search here and see which sounds the most appealing to you. I think the last time I made it I might have started with a recipe from Better Homes and Gardens cookbook...at least I know that's what I used the very first time I ever made it eons ago!

Never saw it in a can, who knew?

Here in Wisconsin you can find it at deli counters and some restaurants. Usually at a friday fish fry you are more likely to find it served. Each place seems to have its own style. Friday fish fries are common in Wisconsin. Some of the best are at taverns, Elks, VFW etc. clubs.

I never heard of it till I moved to Wisc. Funny, considering I grew up in a German/Nordski area in Minnesota. LOL.

That is ironic, isn't it??? I think I stumbled across the recipe because I hated my mothers "regular" potato salad so much...ANYTHING had to be better than that!!!

    Sure enough, it was!

Not sure she ever forgave me.......

So K. Slink, do you make the sweet or the sour type? I prefer the sweet myself, and I like it served with a nice creamy slaw and perch. LOL.

Hmmmmm, I thought that it all WAS sweet 'n sour! I guess I'd have to say sweet, though...you know pastry types, always trying to sneak some sugar in anyplace that we can...

Here is my recipe for German Potato salad.
*3 lbs red potatoes, boiled *1/4 tsp. caraway seed *Flour or cornstarch for thickening
*1/2 lb bacon, fried crisp *1 Tbs. celery seed *2 hard boiled eggs
*1 med white onion, sliced *1 Tbs. parsley
    *1/4 c. vinegar *1 to 2 TBS. sugar
*1/2 c. water *Salt and Pepper to taste
Slice boiled potatoes and put in large bowl. Saute sliced onions in 3-4 Tbs of bacon drippings. When soft, add vinegar, water, celery seed and parsley. Stir, then add sugar and flour to thicken. Pour over potatoes, salt and pepper to taste, add bacon and eggs and toss. Serve warm.
Everyone seems to like it. If you try it, I hope you will to.

Hi amf1234, Thank you so much. I always got a positive response when I made it, but you never know. Everyone's tatses are different. Some like more sweet or sour, but you can always adjust. When I used to bring it to work, I would keep it in a crock pot and it held up very well. Again, thanks for responding back, some people do not and one never knows if it worked for them or not. Not just my recipe, but others as well.
