Although I've never tried it, I understand that this type of dish is hugely popular in the South, so there must be something to it. I've also heard of Dr. Pepper being used...

Doesn't appeal to me since I know a can of coke has 7 tablespoons of sugar in it. Just not my taste.

I am from the South and I have never made this. It is not made in my family, but I have heard of using Coke in savory dishes. Mainly barbeque sauce, though.

I think the coke or any cola would break downt the enzymes etc., especially in a slow cooker. Kinda like cooking in marinade. I would just use it for the cheaper cuts myself.

I have heard of using 7-up or Sprite for ham.

Ummm. I wonder how Jarritos pineapple soda would work on ham or pork in general? I just love pineapple slices cooked with ham. LOL.

Does the ham/pineapple pizza also have tomato sauce and mozzarella? I'm trying to wrap my mind around that, maybe someday if someone has a slice to spare I will try it, I've heard that it's really good...

Yep, it has the tomato sauce. Many pizzerias call the combination a Hawaiian, and some use pepperoni in addition to (or instead of) the ham. As for imagining the pineapple/ham-plus-tomato flavor, think along the lines of the Cantonese classic, sweet & pungent pork...

As for sodas, I too have heard Dr Pepper recommended. With this and Coke, I think it's not just the taste but the acid at work.

One other soda trick I've heard among the Southern branch of the family is using a ginger ale rinse to alleviate saltiness in a ham. Not sure whether this is actually drawing excess salt from the meat, or is just masking the flavor.

I belong to a crock pot group on another site and I have made a potroast using rootbeer. It was ok but I didn't care for the gravy. My freind does his New Years Day pork and sourkraut roast in a local PA beer. That is yummy! Must be somethin along the same concept.
