I recently came across this term in a cookbook and have never heard of such a thing. It sounds like an over-sized HB egg slicer! Has anyone else seen or heard of this gadget???

Right. Sure looks like an over sized HB egg cutter. Just a different shape. I'd use a HB egg cutter much more than the cheese cutter anyway.(mushrooms as well) so let's just cut the moz. in two and use the egg slicer? just me with a small kitchen......................
I agree, why buy unnecessary things? I agree with Alton Brown, everything in the kitchen should do double duty...

Egg slicer works fine with fresh mozzarella. On firmer mozzarella, I bet it would still work well if the cheese were at room temp.
I have some fresh kicking around the house and may very well be making pizza soon so I can give it a try. The gadget here makes narrower slices than any I've ever seen before, so I'm betting it will handle this task better than I can with a knife, and with much less mess, too!
