Carbs for Dieters - What the Doctor Said

Saw my internist last week. We agreed I should lose twenty pounds. Then, out of the blue, he told me if I wanted to lose weight, the following were the only carbs I should eat: plain bagels, sweet potatoes, oatmeal, multigrain bread and brown rice. Anyone else heard this?

I'm not positive, but I think they convert to sugar more quickly in the body. Something to do with the glycemic index? Need to do some research for a more definitive answer....

    From the SME of diets....

okay now you've done it. The "pit bull of research" here. I could write a book on healthy eating. Hubby keeps telling me I should. Well, I've a published article on it so far. Anyway...... your doctor has it partly right but missed about 90% of it. Basically the Low GI is food that takes time to digest. The hi GI foods convert fast to starch and end up as a weight gain.

One of the best sites I found was by Dr Oz and Roisen

    www.realage.com

The best book on the market is by Rick Gallop at

    www.gidiet.com

try some of his recipes. I always get compliments when I use them.

I also belong to www.Prevention.com they have a very good weight loss plan.

    Hope some of this helps.

I can understand that, KarenB, for the final four items (sweet potatoes, oatmeal, multigrain bread and brown rice). But bagels? They're white flour. What makes them different?

Beats me, I don't see the reasoning behind it either!

no fat and that's where your Dr. is half right. the white is bad, high GI white stuff. needs to be whole wheat bagels, really still no fat. better with almond butter. even thin layer of jam is better than butter. peanut butter occasionally. pb and jam or pb and banana slices.

    Your very welcome.
Stay away from rice cakes. Very high in GI since they are made with white rice. Use brown if you like the taste. I use basmati since it has a nutty smell and taste. Avoid Japanese it is very high GI, I use it rarely when I make sushi.
