Question Desperately Seeking Restaurant 1,000 Island Spice LOL

It’s funny, and hard to describe: At a number of fairly good restaurants, they use the SAME thousand Island. It has a spice that doesn’t exist in store bought products. I think it’s DELICIOUS, and is a BIG cut above the other thousands that I’ve had.

It’s a tough question, because I can’t offer it for a sample taste. If anybody lives near LaGrange, Il. I can give a few restaurants that have it: Al's steakhouse on Manheim Road, B&B in Countryside. Does anybody have any idea what this spice may be? I can’t pick it out from the recipes that I have seen here.

Are you referring to a 1000 island dressing with a spice your trying to ID? or an actual powder mixture?

Not exactly. I'm trying to find out this one spice that they all have in common, OR the name of the 1,000 that they use in these restaurants. I once asked a server what brand it was, and she told me, but I couldn't decipher her Russian accent. I WISH I knew how to describe it, but I don't. Once I even took some home and scanned it on my scanner, with plastic wrap to protect the scanner. LOL I was going to post that pic, but I can't find it.

I've been reading review on this place. Not a good reputation. That means you will be in luck. It must be purchased. so surf the net for food distributors in the area and ask what brand of thousand island they use. We have several former restaurant experts on this forum somebody may be able to enlighten you more than I can.

Oh, o.k. Thanks a lot Karen. You've been a big help. Funny, but NOW I'm being notified of all of the replies today. (from this forum) I think it takes a couple days to kick in.

Party time? share with friends? Give some to the food bank? or just pig out. Seriously if you find some in that size take a minute to memorize the ingredients and say thanks very much not today and make your own. I confess I am a sneaky person when the foodie in me kicks in....anything for the recipe.

    Original Thousand Island Dressing Recipe

    • 3 eggs
    • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 tablespoon white sugar
    • 1/4 cup white vinegar
    • 1 pinch ground cloves
    • 1 quart mayonnaise
    • 3/4 cup sweet pickle relish
    • 1/2 cup chopped black olives
    • 1/2 cup diced red bell pepper

    1. Place eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring water to a boil and immediately remove from heat. Cover and let eggs stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water, cool, peel and chop.
    2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the chopped eggs, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, vinegar, cloves, mayonnaise, relish, olives and red pepper until evenly blended. Chill and serve spooned over fresh greens. Store in the refrigerator.
    See anything different?

Yes Mam. The cloves. That MIGHT be it. My scan shot was a classic. I could tell it had red bells, but I don't think THAT was the flavor. On my life.....before it ends, I will track this spice down. I bet if I could give you a sample, the light bulb would go off, and you would say, "Oh yes that's so & so!" LOL
