Camping out is a superb way of connecting with Nature, and the best way I know to free yourself of the humdrum, everyday existance of most of us.... locked away from the sky, the greenery, and the fresh air. A campfire on a chilly night, and there will be many of those in the future, brings pleasures all its own.

here is a very simple idea for breckfist. (sorry my spelling is bad) in a castiron skillet. fry 5-6 strips of bacon.. remove from skillet. and drain. remove all but 3 tablespoons of bacon oil. take 3 slices of bread remove the center. put in skillet.on med heat. take 3 eggs. ckack 1 each in center of bread. cook tillset the way you want. when set remove to a plate.serve with bacon and fryed potatos... i make this every time we go camping. i cook over an open fire. i can control the heat better. i have a lot of other recipes for camp fire cooking. if you care for them just let me know.

This is an actual recipe from the 1950's cookbook. Betty Crockers cookbook for boys and girls. Eggs in a frame. Thanks for the memory and I just might have to do this again!

Hi all, I know i'm a little late but it will be warm again before we know it and time for camping trips once again. I like to make a recipe called Hobo Stew. It's similiar to an earlier post but uses hamburger instead. For each serving you will need a large square of Heavy duty foil, or two layers of foil will also work. on top of each foil square place one to two cabage leaves, a baseball sized ball of seasoned hamburger (s/p, garlic or whatever you like or have on hand), 4 or 5 cubes each of carrot, potato, or favorite vegetable in side cabage bowl. Crimp foil closed at top until it looks like a "hobo" bag. Place into fire on a bed of coals. Cooking time varies depending on coals and you may nead to rotate pkg. Your nose Knows, carefull when opening it will have lots of yummy broth inside everything should be cooked if the potatoes are done, otherwise close back up and put it back on the coals.

When we use to camp when the kids were young I always froze all the meat in meal size packages and on our way out of town we would stop at 1 of the ice factories and pick up a 5# block of dry ice it always lasted 5-7 days depending on the heat no having to buy bags of ice all week & everything stayed frozen

Sure wish that had been available when I was camping, I got really sick of finding food floating around in ice water every morning...

Hee, hee, hee.....That suddenly brought to mind one of the funniest things I have ever seen in my life, which happened while camping....Overnight rainstorm, but we had plenty of tarps covering our cooking/eating area so it wasn't an issue. Simply poke a broom handle up underneath and the water rolls harmlessly away, right?

Well, for some unfathomable reason my BF looked at the water laden, sagging tarp, got up on tip-toes and tugged at the edge of the tarp right in front of him.....

You got it, about 900 gallons of water hit him smack dab in the old kisser!!! I was on the ground laughing hysterically, too weak to even get back up into my chair...
