What makes a good TV cooking show?

For me. It is tips, tricks, ideas and plain language that I can understand. Not a lot of rambling on, cutting up ect about subjects that have nothing to do with the dish that is being made because I lose my concentration on what they are trying to show me.

I like it when they can rely on the person hosting the show to be interesting enough that they don't have to use a lot of distracting background music. That is what I hate. Background music. I love straight talk, no over the top efferevescence, an ability to tell the history of the dish they are cooking, and not a bunch of heavy rings, long painted fingernails and low cut, tight tops with push up bras underneath.

I agree. I do enjoy the combination cook-travel shows, though. One thing that really drives me crazy is when an audience bursts into a frenzy of applause and shrieking because the cook has had the culinary daring to sprinkle something on top of a dish...that's what the mute button is for!

good eats is my favorite show. i like the feel of the overall show, they are trying to help you think and learn not just follow a recipe.

I concur with K Slink and prefer shows that are about instruction and insight over the ones that are basically a celebrity performance. Good Eats is a perfect example; I always come away with more than a recipe- I feel that I've learned something useful about food and cooking.

I too enjoy travel/cooking shows and the ones about regional cuisine.

I don't mind music or an audience myself- as long as it doesn't sound artificially enthusiastic, as if they've got an "applause" light like a talk show.

One thing that grates a bit is when a host will tell you how easy a dish is to make, and then it turns out to require several specialty utensils plus ten exotic ingredients. Not everybody has an expensive stand mixer or keeps fresh cardamom pods handy.

Sure do miss Two Fat ladies, though. They were a lot of fun and travelled to some really beautiful and out of the way places in England and Ireland.

Rachel Allen has a pretty nice show on PBS, possibly through the BBC. UK recipes beautifully explained and presented, with translations from metric and substitutions for ingredients. Lovely, well spoken lady cooking in an uncluttered country style kitchen with no hysterical audience present. Relaxing and soothing to watch.....

It would be my kind of kitchen except that I am known as the queen of clutter. I've been known to cover an entire coffee table within ten minutes of arriving. Beats me how it happens...
