    Kitchen Disasters

So by now everyone has read about my date square disaster so I thought I'd admit to another one.
Halloween (how appropriate) I decided to make CM's french dressing (it's real good) So I toss the ingredients into the blender and let it fly. Well, in all the years I've had this thing it has been a challenge taking it apart to clean. Not anymore. The bottom got lose and it started too ooze red thick liquid all over the base of the machine and across the counter top. The recipe makes 4 cups by the way. Husband walks by and said "Did you do that for Halloween?" The answer was "yes"....Stop laughing

One time I was in the kitchen during the Christmas holidays making the fruitcakes my mom and my brother like so much. I don't really eat them myself, but they are fun to make. Anyway, my mom and I were busy talking about all sorts of things, and because I am easily distracted I put the whole cake together, baked it, and then found out I had left out the SUGAR. Oh, lord.... it is expensive to make, and labor intensive. I was horrified! So that is probably the biggest kitchen disaster I can think of.... except maybe the Christmas Day I had a sweet potato souffle in the oven, was just sliding it out, and somehow the rack fell out of the oven and the souffle dumped right out on the floor. It broke the dish, made a terrible mess, and I was pretty upset. Oh, yeah... I've certainly got some kitchen disasters to relate.

Okay here's mine. One year I grew a lot of hot peppers of different varieties, including Thai chiles. I've always loved jalapeno jelly so thought I'd make a little as an experiment. I didn't have a recipe & these were the days before internet, so I decided to wing it.

After DH went to bed I put on the gloves & prepped all the peppers & set them to boiling on the stove. After a bit I noticed trouble breathing & thought it was an asthma attack. My eyes stung a bit but I thought that was because I got some in my eye while prepping. I didn't notice much burning in my nose & lungs. I went & got my inhaler & stayed in another room. Soon after DH comes out the bedroom wheezing & complaining, wondering what the H I was doing.

Apparently the capsaicin in the peppers evaporated into the air. Maybe this is a problem even with jalepeno jelly (which I've since discovered has mostly green peppers in it) but when I used so many Thai chiles I guess that made it pretty toxic.

Funny I knew prepping horseradish indoors is a no-no but never made the leap to the obviously more potent chiles.

This is awful! It reminded me of one time when I was boiling shrimp with one of those packaged "shrimp boil" products. I had never done it before (and never SINCE, btw!), so I didn't understand why but I started coughing and just couldn't stop! It was all that pepper in the air. I finally figured it out! Hahaha! I know how you felt!

Years ago, I worked as a waitress in a restaurant that one night featured""CAJUN STEAK" The spices were so intense that the entire staff was coughing--everyone from the front of the house to the back!!! I really had to laugh at the know -it- all chef who came up with the idea in the first place--boy, did that ever backfire on HIM!!!
