Hi Kitchenmisshap and Welcome!!
I have done that before and just kept going.
It didn't seem like there was any difference to me!

Hi Kitchenmishap. Welcome to TalkFood!
It all depends on what the recipe called for. If your recipe called for 2 sticks of butter and you used 4, then just double the rest of the ingredients, too, and you'll have twice as much cake to bake. You can freeze the extra one.
You can get away with some extra butter, too. You can adjust batter consistency by adding more flour and/or other ingredients in small amounts, too.

Just how much is a stick of butter? We buy it in brick form which equals 2 cups.
One time I made some expensive fruit cakes for Christmas for my mom, but we were in the kitchen talking about all these fun things, and what do you know? I left out the sugar. Now, fruit cakes with no sugar are not worth throwing away.... I was devastated. She told me to forget it and chalk it up to one of those famous kitchen blunders we all make at one time or another. I would be afraid of the outcome of an extra pound of butter, but if you go ahead and do it, please let us know how it turns out. You know, some people think there is never enough butter OR sugar! Hahaha!
Thanks CM always run into that one but never got an answer. 1/2 cup = one stick. Good to know.
