i would like to know the best buy for the money on enameled cast iron pots. i understand that le cresent is the best but a little pricey. i would like to know what would be a good buy that would last for the average cook that is not a cheap product.

Le Creuset is nice to have, but as you said, pricey. Don't overlook Lodge (non-enameled) pre-seasoned cast iron pans for long lasting pans at a good price.

Lodge also has a few enameled cast iron pans to choose from. In recent trips to warehouse clubs I've seen a few good quality off brands for about $40 (I picked up one from Denmark). I would stay away from the ones made in China. Le Creuset pans are a worthwhile investment. They have some with stainless steel knobs (or if you already own a Le Creuset, you can purchase the knobs separately and change it out).

Staub is another good brand that makes stylish enameled cast iron pans with pricing similar to Le Creuset.

I just bought, last year, a Tramontina Casserole dutch oven 6.5 Qt at Wal-Mart for under $40.00. It is porcelain coated cast iron. I bought it for the "No kneed bread" receipe. It is quite heavy but for the oven you have to get a new knob if you want to go over 400 degrees. I got a metal cabinet knob at Home Depot and put it on and it works great. I thinks it compares to the $150.00 and up ones that you see. It browns your meat wonderfully and meat comes out so tender from the oven. Works great on high heat on stove top or oven. I think it will last for many many years.

America's Test Kitchen did a review of budged enameled cast iron dutch ovens and their two favorites were Mario Batali at $100 and the very Tramontina you have. I intend to buy that piece myself. Tramontina makes good gear. They have been favorably mentioned in a few other reviews on the show. Good pick.
