I pretty much agree with everyone's take on The Joy of Cooking. I don't really use it for inspiration or recipes but as an information resource, it's a necessity. The other book I use frequently is an old, old book that my wife had before we met called The Settlement Cookbook. It's very ***ist but, if you can get past that, is quite an interesting piece.

Very Common, Yet Virtually Unknown
Potentially Fatal, Yet Easily Treatable
i have had my Joy of Cooking book since shortly after my wife and i got married. And that is 39 years ago. I still go to that book all the time. I have plenty of cook books. But this one has to be one of the best.. I don't know if you all have Borders book store near you.But they are going out of biz. Not to long ago they had this book marked down to $10.00. You mite want to check them out.
I found your Settlement cookbook in PDF Thanks I love old cookbooks. I read them like a novel.

So do I. It is one of my favorite pastimes!
Wow! That digital version of the Settlement House Cookbook clocks in at 92 megabytes! HUGE! I tried to find a smaller on-line version (most full-length on-line cookbooks are, say, 5 megabytes for the .pdf version of a BIG cookbook), but didn't succeed. Anyone else find a smaller version? I really wonder why they required 92 whole megabytes.
